Graphic Design

This semester I made the bold decision to undertake two studios, the first of coarse being Epsilon and the second Graphic Design Studio 1: Image and Text. I have always had a passion for graphic design throughout my secondary and tertiary years. Working in the design field, especially that of the built industry, I feel that it is expected that everyone is able to aesthetically present their designs or any presentation. Never taught, only expected. I have always made a conscious effort to maintain a high graphic standard in all my work, clean fonts, measures margins, simple and not over bearing colour palettes. Part taking in Graphic Design this semester helped to me dig deeper into understanding the importance of the way you present your work, rather that designing purely for aesthetic purposes or to fit in with things that are ‘trendy’. For my design in particular, throughout the entirety of my work during the semester, I used same font, DIN 2014, and basic tonal colour palettes. This would help to not only help showcase my work in an aesthetic manor, but connect each project over the coarse of the semester, making it obvious each presentation was done by me and linked visually to the one previous. I feel this is an important skill to take into the field, being highly competitive, I think having a ‘style’ or ‘aesthetic’ of my own can potentially help my work to stand out and allow people to connect it back me.

Interior Feel + Rendering

Visualisation is important. When designing someone’s home, they want to know what it will feel like to live in the structure and home you as the architect has designed. Over my years of study I’ve fallen in love with renders and the feeling of realism they provide. I have improved my skills in Enscape over the years and hope to further work on and improve them in the industry.

Women in Architecture.

I was having a chat with a friend of mine recently, she just began working in a large property and construction company in Melbourne as a recent graduate. After her first week we met up for dinner to talk about it all and catch up. She told me all about her new office space, and desk, and colleagues, and it lead us to talk about the women she was working with in the industry. There was one thing she said that really caught my attention; “there are no women in senior roles, none. Every women above around 30 in the office is basically doing the same thing as me, because they left at the peak of their career to have kids, then came back and lost the progress they had worked so hard for. Where as the men that were also in those same positions are executives, just because they never had to take maternity leave”… Being a women going into the industry, I was naïve in thinking that it was as progressive as the rest of the world seems to be at the moment. There is major room for improvement.
